Proverbs 31:2

2What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows? (KJV)
In verse 2, the writer begins by quoting the words of his mother's prophecy. Lemuel's (Solomon's) mother is speaking to him in this verse. When she says, "What, my son?," we can imagine her using today's language and saying..."What?!!!"..."Are you kidding me?"..."What were you thinking?".... This line of questionning came after the king had too many indiscretions, with too many women and too much wine. We can all remember the rebuke of our parents and surrogates when we were in the "dumb days" of our youth. I can remember my grandmother repeatedly saying to each of her grandchildren, "Don't be a fool, ALL your life!" We all make mistakes, but we don't want to make the same mistakes over and over again.
When Lemuel's (Solomon's) mother says, "what, the son of my vows?," she is reminding him that his name means, "belonging to God." It was a vow that she made when she gave him his name at the time of his Baby Dedication (Christening), just like Hannah vowed and gave Samuel to God. A child's name can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. When God wanted Abram to believe Him for the promised child, He changed Abram's name from "Abram" to "Abraham," which means "father of many nations." Lemuel's mother was trying to get her son's attention because she loved him. Likewise, God is trying to get our attention today because He loves us....unconditionallly. There is nothing you could ever do or say that would make God stop loving you. He is personally saying to you: "What, my son?".... "What, my daughter?".... "What were you thinking?" because He loves you. (This is your personal journey. Repeat aloud the GEM FOR TODAY several times throughout the day.)
GEM FOR TODAY: I am God's son/daughter. He loves me unconditionally. I belong to Him, and I hear His voice clearly, in Jesus' Name. Amen
